Contemporary Realism Oil Paintings | Still Life, Painting from Life & Classical Techniques
Realism painting is more than depicting the visible world — it’s a pursuit of the “real.” My contemporary realism still life work looks past surfaces to reveal subtext, using objects as connotations that invite interpretation and allegory. I choose unconventional still life motifs that resonate with recurring concepts such as the passage of time, temporality, obscuration, and impermanence.
Surface and technique are paramount. I paint exclusively in oil using classical techniques and custom-made mediums and paints to avoid fillers and control handling. I alternate between precise and painterly approaches while maintaining detailed nuance. A limited palette allows me to explore maximum tonal and color variation; careful balance of contrast (brightness, tonality, shape, and color) guides each composition.
I do not aim for photorealism or perfection. Precision is a tool for understanding form—painted from life—to gain the freedom to paint from memory and the inner vision. Many realistic pieces are completed without photographic reference.
A recurring element is intentional damage: marks, wear, and decay deepen meaning and add complexity. Damage becomes a paradoxical completion, reflecting the human condition and enriching the narrative.
